Andorra round 2 race was exciting as it was my first world cup. The tracks are so much different compared to the Australian rounds, the track was built up of rock sections, roots, rut lines and trees making the track not just exciting but challenging. I was pretty stoked with qualifying and then placed 72nd which I knew I could have done a better run but I’m glad I qualified. World Champs in Italy was the most difficult and head rattling course I have ever ridden. So many polished roots and the tracks elevation were hard enough as is, then the rain hit and made the track slippery and the riders loose. In qualifying I struggled as I didn’t know the track to well as it changed so much each run. For race run the track dried up a fair bit making the track better to ride as lines weren’t as hard to get to and improving times dramatically. Ended up coming 14thoverall in juniors. I would like to thank GCMB for helping me get there.

GCMTB's Rhys Willemse

- 9th at World Championships -

Rhys has achieved his first goal of the year, and that was to finish top ten at the Worlds'. Rhys joined the Australian Team in camp at Val Di Sole, Italy. All the riders were having problems with the track. Heavy rain had caused the track to be muddy and slippery. Most rated this track as one of the toughest in the world, with big roots, steep sections and a rock garden that demanded respect.

Rhys managed to tackle the course with confidence and felt ready to take on the rest of the world in the finals. Rhys qualified 12th, so he was one of the last to come down. Rhys decided to "Go for it" and raced down the course with no fear. He nearly lost it in a few sections of the track but this wasn't his day to crash. He had practiced this course enough to know that one mistake and it was all over for a year. Rhys was flying down this technical steep course and was looking at a time that would of put him within top 5. Unfortunately, New Zealandrider Matt Walker crashed near the bottom of the track and was knocked unconscious. Rhys' race run was red flagged and this meant having to do it all over again.

The pressure on this young 16 year old was huge. Having to race this track at full speed once was hard enough, but to do it twice was a big call. Rhys was met by his Tomac Team manager (Claudio Caluori) and Paul Beggs (Australian Manager) at the bottom of the track. They both did everything they could to pump Rhys up to do it all again. Whatever they did worked and Rhys once again took on this unforgiving track. Rhys gave it his all but his energy levels weren't as good as his first run. Rhys crossed the line and finished 9th in the world.

Rhys was very happy with his first world cup result and hopefully will get the chance to do it all again next year at the world championships in Canberra. Rhys continued his good form in the IXS European Cup in Scoul, Switzerland on the weekend. Rhys took out 1st Place in a time that would of placed him 2nd in Elite. Fellow Tomac Team rider Jo Smith from England finished 2nd. It was a good weekend for the Tomac Team and it was a good result for the young man from the Gold Coast Club. Rhys feels his confidence is back and hopes to continue to produce good results in the upcoming World Cups in Canadain two weeks time.

GCMTB gets '08-'09 Nat'l Rd2

The MTBA management committee agonized over the 6 bids received for the 5 rounds but have now confirmed the following schedule:
Round 1: November 1-2 - Adelaide XCO#1, XCC#1, DH#1
Round 2: November 28-30 - Gold Coast XCO#2, XCC#2, DH#2, 4X#3
Round 3: December 13-14 - Geelong XCO#3, XCC#3, DH#3
Round 4: January 31 - February 1 -  Mt Buller XCO#4, XCC#4, DH#4, 4X#4
Round 5: February 28 - March 1 - Hobart XCO#5, XCC#5, DH#5, 4X#5

Bonus!!!

The Queensland Government’s Gambling Community Benefit Fund provided $9734.00 to The Gold Coast Mountain Bike Club Inc. to have three trailers specifically designed and built to carry Downhill Bikes to the top of the mountain for downhill racing. These trailers were initially used for three days of Downhill Racing for a National Round of the Australian MTB Series in November 2007. There are still a few modifications needed to help protect the bikes from contacting each other.  Now what about a grant for trucks to carry more bikes and pull the trailers, and while we are at it some thirty seater buses wouldn't go astray. Anyone up for donating a complete chairlift from top to bottom?

Club History

The Gold Coast Mountain Bike Club was established in 1990 by a dedicated group of mountain bike riders. With over 150 members and easy access to some of the best trails in Australia, it has become one of the largest and most successful clubs in the country. The club caters for most ages and all mountain bike disciplines, both at the racing and social ride levels. You can have a lot of fun with us.

This weekend,

Or should it be "most weekends"?

Perhaps the best way to catch up with club members is by joining the Saturday cross country ride from 2pm onwards that leaves from the Nerang MTB Centre at Petros Corner 1 Tibbing Street Nerang. For non-MTBA members there is a cost of $5 that we are obliged to charge as per MTBA policy. The rides ususally leave at 2:30pm for the more advanced group and 2:45pm for those getting started or more casual. However, group composition is dependant upon who turns up. These rides are a great way to explore Nerang State Forest and to pick up some local knowledge. Of course a mountain bike of your own is essential as are shoes, a helmet and water. Whether you are 10 years old, 70 years old or somewhere in between this is a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Note: After heavy rain there may be few riders turn up. An offical ride in such an instance is one that is led by a club member and where all riders have signed in. Riders choosing to go ahead with a ride should seek out trails that would be subject to "minimium impact" practices and were it particularly wet, a (shudder) road ride may be in order.
